(Santa Cruz, CA – May 14, 2012) On the second day of racing at the 2012 Amgen Tour of California, Team SpiderTech powered by C10 had one goal in mind today: protect the polka dot King of the Mountain jersey won by David Boily in the opening stage. And so they did.
The course today featured a long flat stretch along the beautiful California coastline, on roads hugging the sandy and sunny beaches before turning inland after the first 100 kilometres of racing. Inland, the peloton faced back-to-back climbs, a category 1 topping at the 125-km mark and a category 2 climb only 15 kilometres later.
The break of the day, comprised of six riders, was formed early in the race, and showed a gap of over 10 minutes along the coastline. As the breakaway entered the second categorized climb, it disintegrated and it was only a matter of time before the peloton would reach the sole leading rider.
With no immediate dangers in the break, David Boily sat comfortably in the peloton for the first climb, stocking up on Bonk Breaker bars and GU Energy gels for the sprint to the line, where he scored five points to increase his lead in the standings.
« It was another great day for Team SpiderTech powered by C10. We were well represented in the first group, managing to stay out of trouble. I took advantage of the day to score a few points and keep the jersey. Great day overall for Team SpiderTech, » said Boily after the awards ceremony.
« The rhythm of the peloton was controlled during the climbs, and that allowed me to score a few points. The jersey has great importance for the team. It’s great visibility. The climber’s jersey is one of the toughest one to win. You have to be in the right breaks, and plan the race well. It’s a well-respected jersey, » added the 22 year old rider.
The race ended in Santa Cruz with a second straight bunch sprint. Peter Sagan of Team Liquigas-Cannondale won the sprint for the second straight day, edging Henrich Haussler (Garmin-Barracuda) and Leigh Howard (Orica-GreenEdge) at the finish line. Four SpiderTech riders were in the main bunch, Hugo Houle, Raymond Kuenzli, Brian Vandborg and Lucas Euser.
Stage three will be held tomorrow, starting from San José to Livermore, a 185-km ride in mainland California with three categorized climbs, including a category 4 climb early in the race.
