Brodie Sneaks Under the Radar in FKG Tour of Toowoomba

Little known elite rider, Brodie Talbot (Racing Kangaroos) catapulted himself into stardom this afternoon, taking out Stage One of the 2012 FKG Tour of Toowoomba easily beating Michael Cupitt (Budget Forklifts) and Bradeley Hall (Plan B) after making the break in the last few kilometres of the race.

Today’s stage started in the township of Cambooya and riders were treated to a rousing rendition of “Advance Australia Fair” sung by a group of local school children’

There was also a minute’s silence in honour of Commissaire and well known cycling identity, Tim Francis, who was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident last month.

Glorious weather conditions made life “very easy” for the peleton today once proceedings got under way, with most interest centred on the performance of riders such as Mark O’Brien, and two-time winner, Pat Shaw.

There were three intermediate sprints in today’s stage.

The first of these was won by Anthony Giacoppo(Genesys Wealth Advisers), with the second and third going to Joseph Lewis (RBS Morgans-ATS Pro Cycling). Lewis now leads the Sprint competition on 8 points, 3 points ahead of Giacoppo after Day One.

Ben Hill ((RBS Morgans-ATS Pro Cycling) won the first two KOMs and Nathan Earle (Genesys Wealth Advisers) took the third. As a result, Ben now leads the KOM competition on 9 points.

Most aggressive rider today was Daniel O’Keefe (Parramatta Racing Team).

“I was feeling really good coming into the race” an eccstatic Brodie Talbot told CSN.

“ I’d had a good solid block of training between the Tour of the Mersey Valley and this race, but I wasn’t sure how I would go against some of the other teams, as quite a few of them had been racing over in Asia.”

“But today I realised I had good legs and got into the move that went away.”

Brodie revealed The Racing Kangaroos didn’t have any major plan for today’s race apart from getting Jack (McCullough) or Craig (Evers) up for the finish.

“It just happened that I managed to get into a break with about 20 kilometres to go over one of the KOMs and the right combination was up there and we weren’t really chased down” Brody added.

Fans at the finish line got a double dose of excitement today, as the field charged past the finish banner and then dog-legged back for a fast sprint to the line within the last 900 metres.

Brodie Talbot took the opportunity to charge to the lead during this final manouvre and was never headed.

Today’s FKG Tour of Toowoomba stage was a fairy aggressive race, especially at the start when there were a few early attacks, however, the peleton basically stayed together for most of the journey.

The anticipated strong headwinds and crosswinds didn’t eventuate, riders looked fairly comfortable as the peleton rolled through the countyside.

Brodie can now look forward to a day in the leader’s jersey, as riders prepare themselves for the hardest stage, with a hill top finish up in the Bunya Mountains.

“I think I might be a marked man tomorrow. I feel a little bit of pressure, but I think pressure will still be on the bigger teams like Budget and Genesys, because they’re the ones who are expected to come away with the win here.

(Laughs) I don’t think there’ll be any outside pressure on me..only the pressure I put on myself!”

Tomorrow’s Stage two of the FKG Tour of Toowoomba starts at Highfields at 1100a.m. and finishes in the Bunya Mountains – a distance of 126 kilometres.
