Sample ImageAfter years of drought-like conditions on the Gold Coast, the idea of a day of racing needing to be cancelled because of rain was quite foreign to organizers up this way.

But last weekend that’s exactly what happened, and Saturday events were washed out, and Sunday’s program also looked in danger but the rain cleared long enough for the Road Race to be staged, and for an Epilogue in the form of a one lap time trial of the Nerang Circuit to take place as well.

The Under 9 to Under 13 riders completed a fast lap of the 600 metre circuit while the Under 15 to 17 riders completed a lap of the 1.4km circuit over the notorious Nerang hill. The fastest time for the big lap went to Under 15 rider, Jesse Kerrison, who beat the fastest U17 time by almost 6 seconds.Sample Image

The road race saw some spirited riding in all divisions.
Daniel Rae, who was not expected to complete the race due to illness, won the final sprint from Balmoral young gun, Mitchell Gale, before having to get off his bike on the warm down lap unable to breath.

Emily Roper simply rode away from all the other Under 15 girls from the first lap eventually lapping the field on the big circuit to win decisively.

Sample ImageThe post-race prize draw saw thousands of dollars worth of prizes given away.

Every competitor's name was drawn and each won a prize ranging from socks and caps to entire outfits, tool boxes, floor pumps and cycle computers.

Jesse Kerrison was awarded the Daniel Bennett Development Fund Perpetual trophy for his outstanding efforts over the weekend.  Jesse rode the fastest TT time out of all the divisions as an U/15.

Both Jesse Kerrison and Emily Roper competed in the State Titles over this weekend, and both received cheques from the Daniel Bennett Development Fund to assist with their expenses.

Cycling Tim was again on hand to capture some great images from the junior carnival, and these are available at http://www.cyclingtim.com/
