One day after the 12 month anniversary of Daniel Bennett’s tragic death during a training ride on the Gold Coast, his girlfriend, Courtney Simmons, looking resplendent in pink lycra, lined up to race on Daniel’s Memorial Race Day, a gesture which captured the hearts of all the fans trackside, and gave the day some extra special meaning.

Due to her inexperience, Courtney’s ride was far from earth-shattering, but it was great to see her getting into the spirit of the day, and how uplifting it was to see her with a huge smile on her face with hands gesturing “victory” in the air… and that was after one lap and crossing over the start/finish line in last place.

The other rider who was elated after the race was the eventual winner, Fiona Richards from the BMW Women’s Development Squad.  Active Image

“It was very hot out there today, but I enjoyed it” Fiona told CSN.

All the Masters Ladies from our Balmoral club got together and got some sponsorship (my husband is one of the sponsors as well), and the idea was to get more ladies racing in the sport.

We have ladies races at Balmoral on Saturday mornings and we also organize club rides.

The ladies can start very basic and even roll up on a mountain bike if they want to. It’s all about enjoying riding and enjoying each other’s company.”

Fiona Richards has been riding for about 4 years off and on, and started to get interested after her son needed someone to take him on his junior rides.

“I haven’t really had much success, and I didn’t have any thoughts of winning today” Fiona laughed. “ I thought I’d try to see if I could get away, and then just keep going.

 I’m just a plodder really!”
