On January 1 2009 the second running of the Daniel Bennett Memorial Race will take place as part of the Goldstars Cycling Club New Year’s Day Criterium event.
The race is named in honour of Daniel Bennett, a 21 year old cyclist who passed away suddenly on 5 January 2007 from Myocarditis whilst on his first training ride back for the year.
Dan was to join his French semi-pro team, Charvieu Chavagneux later that year. Following Dan’s death, the Daniel Bennett Junior Development Fund was established and it’s aim was to raise funds to assist Junior Gold Coast Cyclists achieve their goals.
Four times a year, Gold Coast cyclists donate their race entry money and prize money to the Fund.
The Fund also received a substantial boost with the generous donation of prize money from 2 teams involved in the recent Rhino Linings Teams Racing Series. To date the Fund has paid out over $4000 in assistance to riders.
At the first running of the Memorial Race on 1 January 2008, the Fund granted a scholarship of $2500 to one rider for the year 2008. With a change of direction this year the Fund will award scholarships of $1500 each to two Gold Coast based riders.
Both of these riders were multiple National and State Champions in both road and track in 2008 and now race in the under 17 age group. Jesse Kerrison and Emily Roper will be the recipients of the Scholarships.
The 2009 New Year’s Day Criterium races will be held at the Nerang Criterium Circuit starting at 10.00am with the main race for Elite riders, the Daniel Bennett Memorial Race, commencing at 3.30pm.
The Elite race will attract some of Queensland’s best riders and with over 250 riders entered for the day it will be a huge event.
This year’s event is sponsored by Bendigo Bank who are have been involved in supporting cycle racing on the Gold Coast for quite some time.
There is also a strong possibility that several European based cycling professionals will be on hand to support the event.
