No-one was more excited than Goldstars rider, Peter Roper, after the popular club man took out the Category 2 section of the Bendigo Bank New Year’s Day Criterium at Nerang yesterday.
Roper survived a tough encounter with a formidable group of riders that included former 6 Day World Champion, Danny Clark and the outstanding U17 prospect, Jesse Kerrison.
Danny Clark snatched the first Prime on offer, and looked in menacing form.
Further primes went to Peter Duncan and Oliver Bodack.
“I just sat in for most of the race and had a few attacks” Roper told CSN after his gutsy win.
“I knew I had to stay back and have a rest every now and then, but I had my work cut out keeping Jesse (Kerrison) away from me. I train with him all week..I know what he’s like!!”
Halfway through the race, Peter Roper felt quite comfortable, although not knowing a few of the riders kept him on his guard.
“It was a lot easier going the reverse direction today” Roper explained.

“But it was still a tough race out there. Very hot. I just wanted to be in the top three on the bottom corner, and I knew if I was there I would have a great chance and that’s exactly how it panned out”.
Roper cruised to the line an easy winner ahead of Tim Dalgliesh, Ryan Lee and his ever-threatening nemesis, Jesse Kerrison.
“The win today was pretty special. I won last year as well, so now I’ve got to go for three in a row”.
Peter will now focus on the State Track Championships in February in between being a proud father supporting his highly promising daughter, Emily Roper.
