Around 1500 competitors took-on the Rotary Club of Bathurst Daybreak B2B challenge on the weekend, with Drapac Porsche continuing it winning ways, claiming the top two placing when Australian Champ Peter McDonald and current Bay Classic Green Jersey winner Dean Windsor broke clear in the final 20 km.
The move set up by some nice team work earlier in the 110km event when Drapac Porsche State Hill Climb Medallists Robbie Williams and Joe Lewis broke away early to apply plenty of pressure to the other teams.
Lewis and Williams remained at the head of affairs till a chase bunch crossed the gap around the 70km mark to form a very strong bunch in the race lead coming onto the very important Cow Flat Road section. With both Windsor and McDonald in now with the leaders the Drapac Porsche where in a commanding position although Australian Track Champ Richard Lang had made the move along with inform climbers Ben Dyball and Ben Hill, plus Continental team Ride Sport where represented by Alastair Loutit
With the numbers at the head of the race, Drapac Porsche’s Lewis and Williams kept the pressure, while over a minute behind the group Shaw and Palmer kept check on the peloton after a Peloton Sports lead by a frustrated Cameron Peterson and Budget Fork Lifts missed the move. On the infamous Rockley Mount Dirt section, (25km from the finish) the Aussie Champ McDonald showed his natural talent attacking away from the leaders, while team mate Dean Windsor covering the chase lead by climber Ben Dyball.
Back in the peloton Team Budget Forklifts rider Blair Windsor, Trek’s Kevin Poulton had jumped clear with former world junior Champ Tom Palmer (Drapac Porsche) on the hill with Cameron Peterson and Phil Chapman also desperate to break clear of the peloton in a last ditch attempt to join the leaders.
Drapac Porsches race plan went into its next phase at the top of Rockley Mount where McDonald claimed the King of the Mount Trophy, Windsor attacking over Dyball and then crossing to McDonald to have 2 Drapac Porsche team mates swap turning at the front on the race while the chasers where all racing as individuals after the dirt had spread-eagled the front bunch.
The pair then powering away to enjoy the finish at the famous Mount Panorama where Drapac Porsche did its version of the of the Famed “Allan Moffatt” Ford Form Finish with the team mates shaking hand and raising their arms before local Dean Windsor crossing the finish centimetres infront of Pete Mcdonald.
New Continental Team Ride Sport made the podium with Alastair Loutit third across the line from Hill, Lang, and Dyball, followed by Palmer, Blair Windsor and Poulton with Chapman and Peterson fighting it out for tenth placing.
The Electronic Time system to decide the final placing as the start time has to be counted for all competitors. This shown in the Womens Competition with Ingrid Vize tooking the Queen of the Mount competition on Rockley Mount and then first female across the finish only to be beaten overall by Randwick Botany’s Tanya Newton who put in a super performance after leaving Blayney in a later wave.
It was a similar story in the Short Course event when Julian Hamill crossed the line infront of Stewart Campbell and Ryan ODonnell only to find that took the overall win went to Stewart Campbell due to a later start time, Hamill having to settle for a category win while regular Bathurst visitor Eurobodalla’s Gail Johnson added further to her local record winning the female division of the Short course.
