Competitors where very impressed with the energy and hype the Toowoomba Cycling Club put into this year’s Jon Brooks Memorial Road Race, with the 125km event drawing an excellent field.
Representatives from three of Australia’s Continental Contract teams (Budget Forklifts, Fly V Australia, and Drapac Porsche) participated in the race which took place on the roads around Mt Tyson, (45 kilometres west of Toowoomba).
The Toowoomba Club ensured locals got the opportunity to mix with the UCI contract riders, with the Continental teams all attending a Meet-n-Greet on the Saturday Evening before the Sunday (19th July 09) event.
The A grade race was an aggressive tactic affair with Fly V Australia gaining the upper hand by getting 2 riders in the early break, with Hayden Brooks joined by team leader an former AIS rider David Kemp. The break quickly going out to a solid lead with Budget Forklifts Cameron Jennings making up the leading trio.
With things getting desperate back in the peloton as the race went into its final lap team Budget Forklifts sent the Cavalry across to the leaders with Malcolm Rudolph, Cameron Hughes, Blair Windsor (plus NSWIS/FRF contract rider Brendan Brooks) jumping across the gap to form a 7 man bunch to sprint it our for the win.
In a dramatic dash to the line Budget Forklifts Malcolm Rudolph took the win with Fly V sprinter David Kemp falling. Second going to Cameron Hughes and third to Brendan Brooks, Budget Forklifts finishing with 4 in the top 5 with Cameron Jennings and Blair Windsor next to finish.
Luck not with the Fly V team with Hayden Brooks 6th and David Kemp walking across the line for 7th. Matt Wood leading the next bunch in, with Drapac Porsche strong man Robbie Williams and Merida’s Chris Williams rounding out the top ten
