Canberra's Susan Powell and West Australian Claire McLean have claimed more medals for Australia at the 2009 UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships in Bogogno, Italy.
Powell won the gold medal in the LC2-CP4 combined women’s time trial while McLean collected bronze in the LC1 women's time trial.
"Sue has been racing for less than 12 months and has progressed to World Champion at her first international competition," said James Victor, National Para-cycling Head Coach. "She improved her average speed at the qualifying events in Australia, from 34 to 38.5km/hr for the 19.4km distance."
Powell completed the race in a time of 30min24sec (factored time 29:01) to finish five seconds ahead of American CP4 rider Jennifer Schuble with Canada's Marie-Claude Molnar (CP4) finishing third.
In the women's LC1 event McLean posted a time of 29min26.97sec to finish in third place. Paralympic Champion Sarah Storey from Great Britain won the gold medal in a time of 27:02.45 with American Greta Neimanas second in 28:03.90.
Australia has only three riders entered at this year’s Championships and all have now claimed a medal with Michael Gallagher opening the tally with silver in the LC1 men's time trial on Thursday.
All three have yet to contest the road races where Gallagher, who claimed bronze in the event at the Beijing Paralympics, is hoping to again be on the podium.
