CSN caught up with Jesse at the Nerang Velodrome last night for this exclusive interview:

CSN: Whose idea was it to go down to Tasmania?

JK: It was my mum and dad’s, as we had gone to our grandparents for Christmas for ages. And when we were down there, we decided to tackle the Christmas carnivals. They were on, so we raced them.

CSN:Did you have any expectations of how you would go?

JK: Not really, because I didn’t know anyone down there. I was just hoping to et down there to see some of the competition for the Nationals.

CSN: Was it a bit of a shock to your system?

JK:  Yea. I was tired after the first few races..very tired.

CSN: You came back with an incredible record because you just about won every Under 15 race down there including a few Wheelraces. How did you feel after all that?

JK: I felt very, very good, and what also made it better was the fact that my great Nanna offered to double the prize money. Yea, the experience was just great down there.

CSN: You started off scratch in all the Wheelraces, so you obviously didn’t creep under the Handicapper’s guard?

JK: Well..no. One of the handicappers in Brisbane warned me that they would already know about me and would have me starting off scratch, and I was hoping that wouldn’t be true.

CSN: Did you find it fairly tough off the scratch mark?

JK: Yea, the races were really hard. I remember in one of them at Burnie I was off the scratch mark and the first marker was off about 280 metres. It was so hard to get it back.

CSN: You seem to be sharing your abilities on the track as well as the road, so which do you prefer?

JK: Probably track. Track’s more exciting because of the speed, but road is just a bit more interesting because of the hills, but at the moment it’s track.

CSN: Are you going down to Tasmania again at the end of this year?

JK: Yes, hopefully, but we might have to go to my nanna’s in South Australia

CSN: You also won the  title of Junior Athlete of the Carnivals in Tasmania. Was this a surprise for you?

JK: Absolutely. I didn’t know the Award existed and we got a phone call saying I’d won it after we got back to Queensland. I went “Wow! It was really good. I think I won about $200 and certificate.

CSN: What’s your next goal?

JK: The States are on next week, and I hope I can go well in those. And if I get to the Nationals, I’m going to go for the 200m National Record.
