Monday evening at the Bob Whitford Cycling Track in Newborough saw some great racing.
The standout ride was that of up and coming club junior u/15 Jerome Bechaz in the opening event an all in 12 lap scratch where he matched it in the final laps with the A division senior riders to finish fourth.
Bechaz riding restricted gearing was so competitive that going down the back on the bell lap he headed the more fancied riders before being overtaken with less than 100m to race.
The race was won by Jarrod Peachey from Wayne Collins with Justin Gravett 3rd.
Event two was the B division series points race, an Elimination Scratch with just five riders; the first three laps were excluded from anyone being eliminated.
The first to be eliminated was John Kirk followed a lap later by Wayne Tunks leaving John Taylor, Michael Dawson and Ken Whittaker to fight out the top places. Next to be eliminated was Dawson. The final sprint to the finish line saw Ken (sprinter) Whittaker take the win from Taylor.
Event three was the A division series points race, an Elimination Scratch once again the first three laps being free from eliminated. Lap four saw Roland Elsdon the first to be eliminated followed a lap later by Michael Krausz, next to go was Justin Gravett then the highly fancied Wayne Collins leaving Warragul CC u/19 rider Callan Barker and LCCC member Jarrod Peachey to fight out the finish.
In a close sprint to the line Peachey just edged Barker out to take the 7 points for the win.
Event four was an all in 2000m Handicap, a prelude to next Sunday’s feature race, the Bob Whitford Memorial Hcp at the club's TRUenergy Track Carnival. The Handicap had the scratch men giving some big starts to the out-markers.
As the bell rang out to start the race limit man Jim Jones (340m) got away well as did Wayne Tunks (280m) and Michael Dawson (260m).
Just after passing the start/finish line with three laps to go Tunks and Dawson worked well and soon had Jones behind them. Taylor (210m) having his first handicap race was a bit slow away and was soon caught by John (Captain) Kirk (200m) and Ken Whittaker (190m).
Roland Elsdon (120m) was caught by Michael Krausz (70m) but was unable to catch the riders in front of them. Justin Gravett (50m) tried to stay with scratch men Wayne Collins and Jarrod Peachey as they came by, but found the speed to fast and soon dropped off.
As the bell sound Tunks, Jones and Dawson had run their race as Whittaker and Kirk flew past with the scratchies closing fast. Going down the back the final time Peachey and Collins eased just enough for Whittaker to grab Peachey’s wheel giving him a slight breather and enabling him to hang onto them.
Kirk had dropped off but still pushed to finish fourth while up front as the hammer went down in the last two hundred meters, Whittaker riding well hung on for third leaving Peachey and Collins to race for the win. In the finale Peachey managed to just edge out Collins in a close one.
With his win in the D division Elimination scratch race Ken (Sprinter) Whittaker (27points) takes the lead in the series with Wayne Collins 2 pts back and Jarrod Peachey a further 1 point behind.
